"‘Eleven Modern Antiquities’ is a perfect power pop album, with a dazzling array of guest musicians, including Andy Partridge & Dave Gregory of XTC (Andy co-writes two tracks with leader Thomas Walsh), Neil Hannon of The Divine comedy, Michael Penn, Jason Falkner, The Section Quartet and Nelson Bragg of The Brian Wilson Band. The result is an amazingly awesome pop sound and best described by reviewer Alan Haber, “Walsh is a pop pundit who fuels his ideas with his deep-seated love of the pop form, whose admiration of the classic pop sound brought forth by bands like the Move and the Electric Light Orchestra and XTC knows no bounds.." This wonderful album finally saw it's long overdue vinyl release back in 2014 - thought to be completely sold out (an it HAS been deleted) I have found a batch more in our Sugarbush warehouse. So here is another chance to grab a copy of this wonderful Scottish Jangle pop classic.
initially released on CD it was so well received that ALAN MCGEE signed
the band to his POPTONES label. A classic Scottish record that is full
of melody, great harmonies and 12-string Rickenbackers. Every song on
this album is a winner.
This from the ACTIVE LISTENER WEBSITE: When it was originally released back in 2000, the Cosmic Rough Riders
second album "Panorama" had the cream of the U.K music press (Uncut, Q,
Mojo etc.) falling over themselves to announce its brilliance.
A Scottish band with a convoluted personnel history (let's just say that singer / songwriter Daniel Wylie basically is the Cosmic Rough Riders), on their second album they added a whole bunch of sunny California and West Coast to their melodic Teenage Fanclub jangle, with Wylie writing the best songs of his career (although his subsequent solo career has been pretty flash too).
There's an immediate appeal to these songs that makes it easy to see why they were tagged the "next big thing", but harder to work out why they didn't stick in the public consciousness of the time. Certainly the open adoption of the vintage sixties influences on display here was unusual for the time, and may have been enough to confuse the casual punter into buying the latest Travis album instead, but tracks like "Revolution (In The Summertime)" and "You've Got Me" tick all of the right catchy and melodic boxes to be players on radio, and there's plenty of depth beyond the surface level hooks; "Afterglow" dabbles in alt. country harmonies more effectively than anything you'll hear this side of the Jayhawks, but it's "The Gun Isn't Loaded" which packs the biggest punch with its spot on Eastern psychedelia easily recapturing and redefining "Within You Without You" for a contemporary audience.

From Canada, BHOPAL'S FLOWERS fuse deep 60s Psychedelia with Indian sounds of Sitar. Influenced by Psych heavyweights such as MUSIC EMPORIUM, REIGN GHOST, THE DAVID, COMMON PEOPLE this is one of the finest modern Psychedelic albums I have heard.
"...this 2LP set recalls 1960s psychedelia but not overtly so, and the trippy hippy
elements don’t bury the melodies. The sitars have a hypnotic quality and
the band’s style shifts enough to keep you engaged, like “Tomorrow’s
Heroes” adds plenty of hooks to all that jangling guitar. This is a long
player with 16 tracks, and while the sunshine is one half, the darker
themes come out on the second half. Plenty of standouts here too, with
“What About You” and the slinky “A Night At The Devachan.” High-quality
arrangements are everywhere, and it ends with a cover of Cream’s “I Feel
Free.” A MAJOR trip and Highly Recommended." (Powerpopaholic review)

Dropkick was formed by brothers Andrew and Alastair Taylor and school
friend Ian Grier in Arbroath on the east coast of Scotland. Starting
off as a punk-pop band, the band discovered the music of The Jayhawks,
The Byrds, Tom Petty and Wilco and their sound gradually matured into
more of an alt-country style but without losing the upbeat, catchy
melodies of their songs.

ORGONE BOX - "CONFECTIONARY" (SUGARBUSH SB069), back in stock after last year's black vinyl micro pressing sold out in two weeks or so this issue is on gorgeous transluscent GREEN VINYL! So much has been written about this classic album which was originally released in Japan in 1996. Sheffield native Rick Corcoran, after playing in Sugarbush Records' band THE SILENT BLUE from 1990 to 1991 took off on his own and formed ORANGE who hat a hit in 1994 with the classic Britpop jangler "JUDY OVER THE RAINBOW".
Sessions at Rockfield with Gus Dudgeon for an album on Chrysalis then collapsed in a haze of hash smoke and overspending. Rick then got a deal in Japan and was given an advance to record this album. It was issued in Japan (only) in 1996 and then - via a strange route (involving former bandmate Tam Johnstone, son of Elton John's Davey Johstone who played in both Silent Blue and also on the Orgone Box album) - was released by my old mate Bill Forsyth via his Minus Zero record shop. It then hit the Psych / Pop world with a crash and over 4000 copies sold, making this the album of the year (or decade) on numerous lists in 2001. To say this has become a cult album is an understatement. This record DEFINES cult album! Shades of Beatles, Guided By Voices, The Kinks and Cheap Trick (after a heavy dose of LSD!) this incredible record even guided and defined COTTON MATHER'S KONTIKI which was released shortly after. This edition is of only 200 copies which will, I promise, become sought after collector's items in a few years time.

"All told, Jollity is a rich compendium of aural excellence that continues the musical legacy being built by Walsh as Pugwash. These eleven compositions are gorgeously arranged and meticulously executed, weaving layers of musical nuance into delicately infectious ballads of love and reflection." The prolific Lane Steinberg and Alexander Khodchenko continue to craft a dense weave of melodic richness on a bed of psychedelic textures. Never predictable, Lane launches into the standout tracks immediately with the rich piano, organ and woven harmonies of the title track and the catchy psychedelic fuzz of “Papa’s Garage.”
However, after those songs, the album slows considerably. “Racing To The Sun” is a fine exercise in restraint, as the melody is sparse but compelling. Other tracks don’t stick out as well, but Lane manages to describe milieus perfectly. On “Bye, Bye Landslide,” we visit a shifty carnival or on “Bernard’s Dilemma” its barbeque time in hell. Musically Alex is able to let loose on “Hidden In Plain Sight” and “Absolutely Hypnotized” with its swirling psychedelic guitar riffs. Overall a very good album that makes you want more. Highly Recommended." (from Powepopaholic.com review)

JEFF KELLY (of Green Pajamas) - "When The World Was Younger" (Sugarbush SB072), limited to around 100 copies on vinyl, this is a sure fire rarity right off the bat. The latest solo outing from Seattle's Green Pajamas mainman is another classic album. Kelly has said that he hopes that this album “is a little bit of something to help momentarily distract the senses, heal the heavy heart and uplift the spirit.”. In trying to find his own way through these troubling times he has done just that for himself and anyone wishing to find a musically soothing escape from our daily reality.
This record is a bit of a continuation from last year’s Beneath the Skies, Under the River. Again,
like that record, both Spain and Portugal are the main inspiration
here, but this 12-song set it a bit of a hodge podge (not in a bad way,
though). There’s four new songs as well as a few remakes of older songs
and four singles, too. First cut “Of Missingness” has some of that
wonderful flamenco -style guitar while the dusty “Black Eyes” has a bit
of a Southwestern Giant Sand/Calexico feel to it. There a new version of
an old song called “Autumn in Lisbon” which has swaying beat to it
while things get smoky on the mysterious “Only Endless Tomorrows” and
the record ends with a lovely, acoustic version of “Christina Dancing”,
Kelly’s tribute to flamenco dancer Christina Hoyos. As Kelly himself
said, “The album is very nostalgic and about “missingness” and of
longing for another place and time when the world was younger. We could all do with a little of that right now. £27.99 with free postage anyway. 100 copies only.
Only £27.99 including free postage anywhere. (120 copies only pressed!)
