ORGONE BOX - "CONFECTIONARY" (SUGARBUSH SB069), back in stock after last year's black vinyl micro pressing sold out in two weeks or so this issue is on gorgeous transluscent GREEN VINYL! So much has been written about this classic album which was originally released in Japan in 1996. Sheffield native Rick Corcoran, after playing in Sugarbush Records' band THE SILENT BLUE from 1990 to 1991 took off on his own and formed ORANGE who hat a hit in 1994 with the classic Britpop jangler "JUDY OVER THE RAINBOW".
Sessions at Rockfield with Gus Dudgeon for an album on Chrysalis then collapsed in a haze of hash smoke and overspending. Rick then got a deal in Japan and was given an advance to record this album. It was issued in Japan (only) in 1996 and then - via a strange route (involving former bandmate Tam Johnstone, son of Elton John's Davey Johstone who played in both Silent Blue and also on the Orgone Box album) - was released by my old mate Bill Forsyth via his Minus Zero record shop. It then hit the Psych / Pop world with a crash and over 4000 copies sold, making this the album of the year (or decade) on numerous lists in 2001. To say this has become a cult album is an understatement. This record DEFINES cult album! Shades of Beatles, Guided By Voices, The Kinks and Cheap Trick (after a heavy dose of LSD!) this incredible record even guided and defined COTTON MATHER'S KONTIKI which was released shortly after. This edition is of only 200 copies which will, I promise, become sought after collector's items in a few years time.

"All told, Jollity is a rich compendium of aural excellence that continues the musical legacy being built by Walsh as Pugwash. These eleven compositions are gorgeously arranged and meticulously executed, weaving layers of musical nuance into delicately infectious ballads of love and reflection." The prolific Lane Steinberg and Alexander Khodchenko continue to craft a dense weave of melodic richness on a bed of psychedelic textures. Never predictable, Lane launches into the standout tracks immediately with the rich piano, organ and woven harmonies of the title track and the catchy psychedelic fuzz of “Papa’s Garage.”
However, after those songs, the album slows considerably. “Racing To The Sun” is a fine exercise in restraint, as the melody is sparse but compelling. Other tracks don’t stick out as well, but Lane manages to describe milieus perfectly. On “Bye, Bye Landslide,” we visit a shifty carnival or on “Bernard’s Dilemma” its barbeque time in hell. Musically Alex is able to let loose on “Hidden In Plain Sight” and “Absolutely Hypnotized” with its swirling psychedelic guitar riffs. Overall a very good album that makes you want more. Highly Recommended." (from Powepopaholic.com review)

JEFF KELLY (of Green Pajamas) - "When The World Was Younger" (Sugarbush SB072), limited to around 100 copies on vinyl, this is a sure fire rarity right off the bat. The latest solo outing from Seattle's Green Pajamas mainman is another classic album. Kelly has said that he hopes that this album “is a little bit of something to help momentarily distract the senses, heal the heavy heart and uplift the spirit.”. In trying to find his own way through these troubling times he has done just that for himself and anyone wishing to find a musically soothing escape from our daily reality.
This record is a bit of a continuation from last year’s Beneath the Skies, Under the River. Again,
like that record, both Spain and Portugal are the main inspiration
here, but this 12-song set it a bit of a hodge podge (not in a bad way,
though). There’s four new songs as well as a few remakes of older songs
and four singles, too. First cut “Of Missingness” has some of that
wonderful flamenco -style guitar while the dusty “Black Eyes” has a bit
of a Southwestern Giant Sand/Calexico feel to it. There a new version of
an old song called “Autumn in Lisbon” which has swaying beat to it
while things get smoky on the mysterious “Only Endless Tomorrows” and
the record ends with a lovely, acoustic version of “Christina Dancing”,
Kelly’s tribute to flamenco dancer Christina Hoyos. As Kelly himself
said, “The album is very nostalgic and about “missingness” and of
longing for another place and time when the world was younger. We could all do with a little of that right now. £27.99 with free postage anyway. 100 copies only.
Only £27.99 including free postage anywhere. (120 copies only pressed!)
