Last few vinyl LP copies of CADDY - "THE BETTER END" (SUGARBUSH RECORDS) here!

CADDY - "THE BETTER END" (SB015), limited to only 300 copies on sky blue vinyl!
Sometimes it is best to DIY, and that is precisely what Tomas Dahl has done on "The Better End". After many years in the music industry, partly as a drummer in bands like Turbonegro and The Yum Yums, he is now in the driver's seat with his own project Caddy.
The songs on the album have been made during the past eighteen months, and is written in such diverse places as the Norwegian Mountains, via the French Riviera, Fuerte Ventura and Perth in Australia. Here you're served a delicious mix of The Beach Boys, classic power pop and several of his personal favorites such as The Shadows, Kraftwerk, Teenage Fanclub and Don Henley.
Although there are still great emphasis on catchy pop songs, Dahl also gets to showcase himself as a lyricist on "The Better End". The result is a sophisticated summer album, with lush vocal harmonies, beautiful arrangements and dreamy melodies.
He has written all the songs and recorded the album all by himself, but is joined by Bendik Brænne on saxophone for the song "Wherever You Go", and Janne Hea on vocals on "Bring It Back".

SOLD OUT NOW (sorry)

Pre-order CADDY - "TEN TIMES FOUR" here on vinyl, ships November 17th.

CADDY - "TEN TIMES FOUR" (SUGARBUSH SB055), following on from 2015's THE BETTER END, here comes the latest album by Norway's finest: Caddy. Another very fine selection of fantastic songs this really is the last word in Powerepop and in the words of Powerpop News: "There are so many standout tracks here it’s hard to know where to start. The pulsating start of “Somewhere Beautiful” bursts into about as radio-friendly a chorus as you’ll hear this year. The aptly named “Contagious” is more than worthy of it’s title. With it’s harmonies, hand claps and monster hook of a chorus, it’s a real keeper. Then, one can settle comfortably into the jangle-fest that is “Not the One” or soak in the Big Star feel of “Safe Travels”. It’s nothing short of a vacation for the ears. With fantastic production, a killer cut and a fantastic sound, this 140gm pressing is housed in a pvc lined inner for added protection. Only 300 copies pressed, this is expected to sell out very quickly. Only £19.99 including worldwide postage! (Ships November 17th).

THE GREEK THEATRE "LOST OUT AT SEA" a psychedelic masterpiece, only 200 on vinyl - buy it here!

THE GREEK THEATRE "LOST OUT AT SEA" SB011,
A fabulous Californian West Coast themed album by this new band. Out for the first time on vinyl, this got rave reviews when first released on download about a year ago. Shades of DAVID CROSBY, BEAU BRUMMELS, THE BYRDS and the fantastic songs make this an essential addition to any self-respecting Psych collection. You would not dream that these are a couple of Swedish guys sitting by a lake in the middle of the countryside, but there you are. It has San Francisco all over it and you will love it.

VELVET CRUSH "Free Expression" buy it here on vinyl, free postage!

VELVET CRUSH - "Free Expression", Among power-pop's truest believers, Ric Menck is a visionary and a scholar, a brilliant pilgrim on a lifetime quest to understand and master that inscrutable fusion of allure, insight and energy that yields the most sublime melodic devotionals to the grand wizards of the two-minute single: Brian Wilson, Alex Chilton, Roger McGuinn, Ray Davies, Pete Townshend, Phil Spector, etc. That he has sought to do so from behind a small drum kit rather than with a guitar or piano only heightens the intensity of the Illinois native's efforts, sharpens the clarity of his perspective. Where other auteurs have found easy creative satisfaction in the imitation of some obvious aspect of their icons' formulae, Menck — who can both sing and play guitar but rarely does either in public — demonstrates a keener, deeper obsession with the zen of pop.

THE JACOBITES - "GOD SAVE US POOR SINNERS" (LP plus 7" single) buy it here on vinyl, free postage!

THE JACOBITES - "GOD SAVE US POOR SINNERS" (LP plus 7" single), What do you do for a second act when the bedroom rock band you formed with your little brother and a couple high school buddies churned up some of the richest soil of a musically fecund age? The Swell Maps, led by Nikki Sudden and his brother, the late Epic Soundtracks, have gotten props over the years from members of Sonic Youth, Big Black, and Pavement for their prescient blend of punk economy, Krautrock-inspired experimentation, and lo-fi production values. But Sudden took a decisive turn when the Maps broke up in 1980, adopting the persona of a folk-rock troubadour and the wardrobe of a glam rocker. His beautiful-loser laments owed more to Bob Dylan and Neil Young than to erstwhile inspirations Can and Faust; and whereas the teenage Swell Maps looked like a bunch of comic-book collectors, he came off like a composite of Marc Bolan and Keith Richards, with his leather pants, silk scarves, garish costume jewelry, ruffled shirts, and omnipresent dangling cigarette. In 1984 he hooked up with fellow mascara junkie Dave Kusworth, and as the Jacobites they made several fine collections (Jacobites and Robespierre's Velvet Basement are both available on Mammoth) of tunefully off-the-frilly-cuff semiacoustic laments about lost love and their own mythical existence as rock 'n' roll fops. After the two songwriters split in 1986, Sudden used the name for a few solo projects, but in 1993 he reunited with Kusworth, and the duo's second wind has lasted far longer than its first. God Save Us Poor Sinners was thei com-back album originally released on Bomp! Records in the USA.

DANIEL MCGEEVER "Cross The Water" new album - buy it here on vinyl, free postage!

Daniel McGeever - "Cross The Water", Sugarbush's very own WELLGREEN man makes solo LP, a beatifully produced Scottish Pop gem. The opener “Julia” builds a mid-tempo love song that recalls Elton John or Paul McCartney with a chorus brimming with sweet harmonies. The emotional appeal of McGeever’s music also reminds me of Graham Gouldman or Gilbert O’ Sullivan. The album starts out hopeful, “Life’s A Game” has McGeever belt out the chorus, and it leads to the wistful “Wedding Day,” with its nostalgic feel. On tracks like “Return” the piano takes on a slight baroque quality, but as the album continues the compositions are more classical folk like “For Violet.”

Most of the album is love balladry, but the best romantic gem here is “Our Love Will Remain” and McGeever’s double-tracked harmonies are especially good. “It’s Not Over All Yet” finishes our story with a six-minute epic Billy Joel meets David Gates flourish, dramatically stating “in the face of adversity there is always a little hope.” A great romantic album that stands up to multiple listens, and highly recommended.

Green Pajamas Strung Behind The Sun stream

Musically, to me, this is the best Green Pajamas album we have released, it's quality of songwriting and playing is simply magnificent.
Original release date: August 15, 1997 by Camera Obscura, Australia.

"With its Art Tatum shuffle, ghostly imagery and Middle East-meets-Middle England vibe, it's as fleeting and special as a dream about the most magical hippie summer you never had." One of the "Top 10 neglected American classics" - Tom Cox, The Guardian Unlimited

From the Camera Obscura website, 1997:
'The first new full-length CD of the Green Pajamas' 60s influenced psych-pop since Green Monkey/Bomp released the truly excellent "Ghost of Love" in 1990. Main songwriter Jeff Kelly has always been one of the US’s finest practitioners of the psychedelic pop song, and over the last few years his songwriting has reached dazzling maturity and depth, as showcased in his most recent solo album "Ash Wednesday Rain". Believing that "Ghosts of Love" was the Green Pajamas "Rubber Soul" and that Kelly and Co still had a "Revolver" in them waiting to be drawn out, Camera Obscura approached Green Pajamas to coax them out of their semi-retirement. The result is "Strung Behind the Sun".

'Over the course of 15 songs, the Pajamas stage the biggest comeback since Lazarus, and show why no-one can touch them in their chosen genre. "Strung Behind the Sun" is a dazzling ray fired into the prism of psychedelia refracting off in all directions. Lyrically, it is a winter record, and one imagines long creative afternoons spent in Seattle coffeehouses under siege from the rain. The listener is treated to songs about snow and Madonna complexes, family and strangers, love and loss. Standout Kelly’s tracks "The Brain I Realize" updating "I am the Walrus" and "Tumbledown Tess", written in the wake of his father’s death. Other band members also contribute in fine style, Joe Ross’s "anthemic "Graduation Day", and Eric Lichter’s "Scarlet Song" which climaxes the album.'

TRAPPIST AFTERLAND & MOONGAZING HARE "SONGS FOR NATHAN" buy it here on vinyl, only 200 copies, bonus track!

TRAPPIST AFTERLAND / MOONGAZING HARE - "SONGS FOR NATHAN" (SUGARBUSH SB051), an audiophile issue on vinyl for the first time with 4 extra tracks not on the cd. a collection that gathers together both Moongazing Hare and Trappist Afterland for an twelve track split set. Hopefully if we think on, we’ll be coming back to this in due course, for now a brief tasting of what to expect with us finding ourselves somewhat smitten by both bands openers. The haunting ‘fine horseman’ opens the Moongazing Hare account, emerging from the twilight, a ghost lit ballad whose shadowy entrancement creaks with a magical hush to softly draw you in with its eerily whittled woodland craft and into the bargain sumptuously steeped with a morose majesty that recalls the black heart procession. Trappist Afterland serve up ‘restless day’, in truth sounding like they’ve fallen from another age long since consigned to memory and legend, they craft a seriously intricate and nonetheless bewitching brew which manifests in the shape of this outer worldly spirit walker. Swarthy, hazy and a tad mystic, ‘restless day’ is the kind of thing you’d expect to emerge from the shadowy backwaters of Ecstatic Peace et al, a mysterious folk wanderer weaving a multi lingual tapestry of tripping acid folk and Indian raga mosaics. £19.99 including postage annywhere.

TRAPPIST AFTERLAND - "LIKE A BEEHIVE, THE HILL WAS ALIVE" buy it here on vinyl, only 200 copies, extra tracks!

TRAPPIST AFTERLAND - "LIKE A BEEHIVE, THE HILL WAS ALIVE", a brand new deluxe audiophile limited repress, (SUGARBUSH SB053) This contains two BONUS TRACKS (not on the original vinyl): "Penitents' Trail" and "Father - sun itself live. The music Trapped Afterland create is very hypnotic and rich and, while I just sort of look around when they have an abundance of lyrics such as: “I feel like a sketch... lalala... Without any shading”,  the understated richness of the multitude of odd and compelling vocals and instruments makes it all work.
Don’t pass Trappist Afterland up if you truly want a heavy, melodic dose of authentic modern psychedelic music. While they advertise themselves as producers of spirit music for the dispossessed (Not exactly the target audience for great financial reward...), they have a marketable musical product here which is well worth listening to by any fan of late 60s pop music at its purest.

A new LP in our SPECIAL IMPORTS SERIES on vinyl! Smart Patrol "Overage Underachievers"

SMART PATROL - "OVERAGE UNDERACHIEVERS", another volume in our long running "Special Imports" series! These four guys from Munich joined forces to fuse classic songwriting of the sixties with the sound, power and attitude characteristic of the music revolution of 1976-1978 and this resulted in 12 one-of-a kind powerpop gems wrapped in a tailor-made suit of hooks and melodies on their new LP "Overage Underachievers".
But don't mistake them to be retro: they all started out in punk-influenced bands, so in the end they've only gone back to their roots, or as they sing in their tribute to Munich's Atomic Cafe: "It's time to get back to basics"
So what you get here is an album packed with perfect shots of power poppin' 70's mod-punk that would be all over the radio in an ideal world. THE GRIP WEEDS "HOUSE OF VIBES" (SUGARBUSH SB048) out on vinyl now, buy it here!

THE GRIP WEEDS "HOUSE OF VIBES" (SUGARBUSH SB048), out now is their classic debut 2004 album repressed on high quality 140gm audiophile vinyl! Limited to only 400 copies with a full colour insert.
The New Jersey band's raucous blend of Cheap Trick's power chords, the Byrds' ethereal jangle and CSNY's airy harmonies was different, half a decade too early for the New York-based garage revival of the early 00s, and a decade or so too late to be in sync with the West Coast's Paisley Pop movement. No wonder this self-recorded, self-released gem of the power pop art fell on mostly deaf ears, lauded by a few Jersey visionaries, hailed in Germany but completely ignored by commercial radio and MTV.
It's too bad, because if there ever were a record tailor-made for blasting out of AM radio on the way to the beach House of Vibes is it. From the first crunching chords of "Out of Day" through the last feedback tripping psych solo of "Walking in the Crowd", the record balances precisely at the tipping point between rock and pop. It's the same enticing ground that the Who covered in their classic Sells Out, simultaneously hard-edged and accessible, blossoming with melody and rackety with drums. And along the way, the band cranks out half a dozen classic songs, "Salad Days", "Close Descending Love", and "Don't Belong."
This is a truly stunning album and the fact that this band are not massive is tragic as well as kinds cool as it keeps us who are in the know part of a very exclusive club. Buy this album today, you will not regret it. Sealed from the factory - limited to 300 copies - on audiophile 140g black vinyl - now with extra smooth polylined inners to ensure maximum quality. Always prevalent, however, is Dom's twangy reverb drenched guitar. What makes this album stand out are the superb arrangements and an overwhelming air of mystery and wonder. DUNCAN MAITLAND (with Pugwash) "Lullabies For The 21st Century" last copies on vinyl here!

DUNCAN MAITLAND "LULLABIES FOR THE 21ST CENTURY" (SUGARBUSH SB017), only 250 copies on coloured vinyl! £18.99 inc. postage. Ex Pugwash man Duncan Maitland sees his legendary album released on vinyl for the very first time. Featuring members of XTC, DIVINE COMEDY & PUGWASH this is a fantastic 60s tinged album of melody, harmony and brilliant playing. A review in "Powerpopaholic" sums it up thus:"Dublin native Duncan Maitland is joined by an all-star guest line-up on his smashing debut Lullabies for The 21st Century. Colin Moulding from XTC plays bass on the opening track, and also helping out are Fran King, Barry O'Brien, Keith Farrell and Tosh Flood (Pugwash). Recorded at his in-home studio, the album draws influences from many favorites. Starting with the richly melodic "Your Century" it has glowing background harmonies and driving bass line.  Followed by the flowing narrative of "Terry The Toad" it adds a great hook in the chorus, and "Crash Position" is a perfect example of modern Beach Boys pop, similar to Rick Gallego (Cloud Eleven).  These songs are not simple ear candy, but complex pop symphonies that don't rely on a straight formulaic approach. Every song on the album is a meticulous study in pop smarts from the Beatlesque touches of "Alien At Home" and "Horror Stories" to the wistful atmosphere of "Supermarket Dream."

PUGWASH - "ALMANAC" (SUGARBUSH SB028), Pugwash' incredible 2nd album is released for the first time on vinyl. 250 copies on orange vinyl and 250 copies on white vinyl, so take your pick! They both look great. The converted will of course know what a classic this album is. For those who have never heard Pugwash, a snippet from one of the hundreds of reviews the band has received: "Thomas Walsh doesn’t like the term “powerpop” and has said that he considers Beatles comparisons to be “lazy”, but it would be difficult to imagine that people who dig the powerpop genre or are aficionados of the Fab Four wouldn’t be the ideal audience for Pugwash. Indeed, when watching the band live, McGee’s bass work sounds like he’s channeling McCartney at his most melodic and inventive. However, the band’s whole output is much more diverse and all-encompassing for them to be simply typecast as another bunch inspired by The Beatles. On your journey throughout this compilation, there will be more influences worn on their sleeves than you will be able to keep track of and I would hope that the listener will come to the same conclusion that I have; Thomas Walsh simply writes music that he would enjoy listening to." The Ptolemaic Terrascope have this to say about this classic album:
" Originally released in 1999, ‘Almond Tea’ by Pugwash (not the former drummer of the Man band...) is brimming with sweet melody, the tunes reminding me of  ELO mixed with Radiohead, whilst some of the melodies suggest that time when Oasis wrote good songs that crawled under your skin. Opening with ‘Missing The Point’ the listener is immediately drawn into Pugwash's world and you find yourself drumming along to the tune whilst second guessing the lyrics (or maybe that is just me), the song having plenty of energy and a powerful production that allows it to soar from the speakers. Absolutely beautiful, ‘Finer Things In Life’ sounds like a Radiohead ballad, the lyrics catching hold of your heart as the music drift around them with a gentle jangle. With a lovely shuffle ‘Shine On Norvell Jefferson’ could have come straight from the White Album, the McCartney version, whilst ‘Two Wrongs’ could be a lost Brit Pop anthem its swagger tempered by the lovely ‘Getting Me Down Again’, the perfect end to side one. Throughout the album it is the song that is important and you can easily make comparisons, however the whole collection is a lesson in the art of melody and dynamics, the flow of the album perfectly judged with the melancholy beauty of ‘Always Be’ paired with the acoustic strum of ‘Could It Be The Same’ side two slowly getting louder until ‘Obvious’ releases the energy that was building, more Lennon than McCartney and definitely Psychedelic with phased guitar and plenty of attitude. Finally, ‘ Nonsense’ leads us out sounding like (pointless comparison time) like Dodgy covering a lost UK Psych tune, a great tune however your ears hear it completing another great album from Sugarbush, something I seem to be repeating in this review." (Simon Lewis)

An excellent introduction to this Australian band / project who are ever evolving and are building up a dedicated following worldwide. Spiritual music at its best, here set in an Acid-Folk context but as deep and honest as Roots Reggae was at exulting Rastafarianims back in the 70s. With shades of Comus, Incredible String Band, Roky Erickson and with lyrics spiritual and sincere in content. Played on a variety of unusual instruments - for western music that is - all their albums challenge and delight in equal measure. Sometimes disturbing yet with a definite beauty as well as melody and grace.
