"Time appears to have little relevance for The Green Pajamas. The Seattle-based band, which remains virtually unknown after 19 years of recording, is just as likely to draw inspiration from 18th century literature as Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd. Their recently released This Is Where We Disappear is a concept album that weaves references to ghosts, religion, lust, and love into compelling pop music.

Opening with the lush and psychedelic title track, The Green Pajamas establish an other-worldly ambience right from the start. Distorted guitars and layered vocals underscore lyrics like, “Now be still my goblin heart, It is time that we depart.” Singer-guitarist-keyboards player Jeff Kelly is the Pajamas’ chief songwriter, and he’s a master of poetic imagery. “The Moorland Ghost” refers to a specter whose “dress was blowing wild/A thousand ribbons in the wind,” while the acoustic ballad, “Softly, Elizabeth” echoes the eccentric charm of Barrett’s early work.“Matilda” rocks harder and features medieval style lyrics based on a 1796 horror story called The Monk.

On the lighter side, “The Waitress At The Old White Lion” calls to mind “Kim The Waitress,” which was recorded by The Green Pajamas in 1984 and later covered by Material Issue. “Sweet 16” is an exquisite pop song about a forbidden love, while “Wild Desire,” set to a primitive drum and bass arrangement, views lust as a disease. “The Wave (It’s Becoming Very Clear)” is a short, symphonic reprise of the title track, and provides a fitting coda for an album that deserves to be viewed as a classic." It’s probably fair to say that Nick Piunti is a bit of a veteran in the power pop world given he goes way back to 1975. That’s not to say his music is any less relevant today, thankfully the need for hummable melodies and classic pop songs remains. In this great new release he has created an album which has a power pop feel with a modern rock sound. In many ways it follows other great acts from The Replacements through Redd Kross and The Fountains of Wayne, which have created a magic line of modern pop rock.
The album actually opens with the title track and it’s a brilliant opening number which is a great power pop song. It has that feeling of youth and just carefree fun that we all had at the age of 13. “On The Way Out” keeps it going with another really smooth and catchy song with some great Na Na Nas in it! If hearing this song doesn’t make you at least nod your head then you’d better check your pulse.

The title alone of The Post-Factual Jam rather speaks to its instrumental freak-out nature, but the strings-soothed Old Jawbone relatively calms things down with its orchestral pop clouds. Then it’s into the eight-minute opus of Bible Black Mare with its pensive bassline, moody haunted desert keyboard atmospherics and the early Neil Young-like vocal whine, the track gradually ebbing away into two minutes of ethereality and whistling....near-wordless, waves-washed track on their Lost At Sea debut, this time with lyrics, as violin and flute enrobed, crystalline pastoral psychfolk, softly dissipating into the ether in its final moments. Dukes Of Kent-"Welcome To the Oast House" SB300, this is the album that kicked the Sugarbush label back into life in 2012. Recorded over two years this was always meant to be an album to bring happiness to ourselves and the plan to release it on vinyl was almost an afterthought. But we did it and now we are an extra 84 releases (or so) down the line, 10 years later. I have just 10 copies left - it was limited to 500 copies.

" Tracks chock-full of chiming guitars, shimmering harmonies and West Coast licks with influences ranging from the Byrds through Crazy Horse to Tom Petty and Joe Walsh: a melting pot of pop,rock, psych and folk with great gobs of swirling guitar which will assuredly set feet tapping and shims shimmying. Limits of the Truth' is one of my favourite cuts on the album, reminding me strongly of early Jackson Browne at the outset. "As I listened to “When I Needed You” I was reminded of an early Strawbs song “We’ll Meet Again Sometime.” “Blue Turns to Red” is a day after song about drowning your sorrows, a wonderful blend of country and psychedelia with the song ending with feedback and experimental sounds. “Ever Day Brings Something New” features harmonica and baritone vocals similar to the Soft Hearted Scientists, as well as another great psych rock guitar solo. “Lay My Burden Down” has a 70s acoustic guitar retro sound that takes me back to my youth. “Water” is another acoustic guitar song that veers into the experimental realm while remaining melodic. And the album closes with “Angels and Ghosts,” an excellent country folk singer songwriter song that made me think of Townes Van Zandt, plus another cool electric guitar solo that takes off! This album is for fans of the six-string guitar and West Coast country rock."

From the opening notes this killer album by this Pennsylvania group does not let up. Amazing Fuzz guitars envoking the finest ever peresented by BLACK SABBATH & BLUE CHEER. The lead vocals would give Ozzy or Paul DiAnno a run for their money. The rhtyhm section is rock solid. Best of all the songs are incredible, tough, well constructed and super-dynamic & exciting. From the opening track "Ghost & The Fly" through "Zombie Flower Bloom" this album does not let up.

" Originally released in 1999, ‘Almond Tea’ by Pugwash (not the former drummer of the Man band...) is brimming with sweet melody, the tunes reminding me of ELO mixed with Radiohead, whilst some of the melodies suggest that time when Oasis wrote good songs that crawled under your skin. Opening with ‘Missing The Point’ the listener is immediately drawn into Pugwash's world and you find yourself drumming along to the tune whilst second guessing the lyrics (or maybe that is just me), the song having plenty of energy and a powerful production that allows it to soar from the speakers. Absolutely beautiful, ‘Finer Things In Life’ sounds like a Radiohead ballad, the lyrics catching hold of your heart as the music drift around them with a gentle jangle. With a lovely shuffle ‘Shine On Norvell Jefferson’ could have come straight from the White Album, the McCartney version, whilst ‘Two Wrongs’ could be a lost Brit Pop anthem its swagger tempered by the lovely ‘Getting Me Down Again’, the perfect end to side one. Throughout the album it is the song that is important and you can easily make comparisons, however the whole collection is a lesson in the art of melody and dynamics, the flow of the album perfectly judged with the melancholy beauty of ‘Always Be’ paired with the acoustic strum of ‘Could It Be The Same’ side two slowly getting louder until ‘Obvious’ releases the energy that was building, more Lennon than McCartney and definitely Psychedelic with phased guitar and plenty of attitude. Finally, ‘ Nonsense’ leads us out sounding like (pointless comparison time) like Dodgy covering a lost UK Psych tune, a great tune however your ears hear it completing another great album from Sugarbush, something I seem to be repeating in this review." Our friends at the ACTIVE LISTERNER bolg say this about this seminal LP: "This isn't easy listening, this is intense participatory bordering on hallucinatory songwriting, not a million miles from the seminal and highly stoned 'Moyshe McStiff' by COB, upon which much of the resurgent acid-folk scene would regard as a touchstone.
There is a restlessness and almost palpable fear and discomfort that permeates this whole record as the brief 'Sungirl' and the very psychedelic 'Parasites' would attest to. - I am always hesitant to throw around terms like "instant classic", but this certainly fits the bill. The album kicks off with the wonderfully titled "Fat Apple (at About Noon)", which also happens to be the longest track on the LP, clocking in at over seven minutes and it really sets the stage for this beautiful record. Melbourne based psych folk artists Trappist Afterland have been quietly but consistently releasing some of the most outstanding and distinctive albums in underground circles over the last four years or so. Consisting effectively of the trio of Adam Cole, Phil Coyle and Nick Albanis along with various friends and musical accomplices their use of unusual instrumentation and unique sound (as well as their easy but persistent way with a melody that will get its hooks in and not let go) marks them out as one of the most important and visionary bands currently working in the psych scene. Their new opus 'Afterlander' not only builds on the successes and strengths of past albums but takes the Trappists into a whole new realm of their own, with a set of assured, powerful and majestic songs tinged with mystery, ritual and beauty. t once otherworldly and yet also immediate and persuasively melodic, Trappist Afterland ably suggest a dark mysticism and esoteric sound whilst also maintaining a tight, rhythmic and controlled mastery of their song craft, similar perhaps to contemporaries such as Stone Breath, Six Organs Of Admittance or James Blackshaw.
